Wolves Come Up Short In Shelby, 14-6

The Wolf Point Wolves couldn’t get their offensive attack going and dropped a tough 14-6 football conference game in Shelby on Friday, Sept. 11.

The Wolves trailed for most of the contest, but Wolf Point still had a chance in the final minute as they put together a drive from their own 15 to as deep as the Shelby 10 before an interception ended the threat with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Shelby accounted for the game’s first touchdown on a nine-yard run with 6:11 left in the opening quarter for a 6-0 advantage.

Another threat later in the quarter was stopped on a nice defensive play by Evan Kawasaki.

The Coyotes put together another scoring threat midway into the second quarter. A quarterback keeper run produced a first down at the Wolf Point nine. Wolf Point’s defense stepped up again as tackles by Cole Holen, Aaryn Hamilton and Chasan Welch along with a pass defended by Jayden Dominique stopped Shelby. On Shelby’s final possession of the half, Wolf Point’s Welch accounted for a sack. The half ended with Shelby leading by just a 6-0 margin.

The Coyotes opened the third quarter on an exciting note when Marshall Richmond returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown. Shelby passed for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.

Wolf Point was able to respond late in the third quarter as a 22-yard punt return by Prestyn Klatt started a drive at midfield. After a defensive pass interference call put the ball at the Shelby 35, the Wolves earned another first down when a pass from Tanner MacDonald to Kayden Charette advanced the ball to the 23.

A quick pass to Klatt and runs by Jesse Reed produced a first down at the 11. After two incompletions, MacDonald hit Klatt with another quick pass and the Lustre senior battled his way into the end zone with 11:10 remaining in the game. The Wolves came up short on a running attempt for the conversion.

The Wolves marched close to midfield later in the quarter, but the possession ended with an interception.

On Wolf Point’s final possession that started on its own 15, a pass from MacDonald was caught by Dominique near midfield. When Dominique fumbled, Klatt recovered at the Shelby 43.

A throw to Dominique and then a run by Dominique resulted in a first down at the 31 with 21 seconds remaining. Two penalties by the Coyotes put the ball down to the 10 during the final seconds. The threat, however, ended when Richmond intercepted a tipped pass.

Wolf Point, 2-1 for the season, will host Malta on Friday, Sept. 18.
