Poplar Edges Lady Wolves In Volleyball Battle

Wolf Point’s volleyball squad got off to a strong start, but Poplar responded with a 24-26, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23, conference victory in Wolf Point on Thursday, Sept. 10.

In the first set, the hitting of Carysn Fourbear and Francesca Crawford led Poplar to a 19-15 advantage.

A kill by Quintana Young kept the Indians ahead 21-19, but the Wolves gained a 22-21 lead on kills by McKinlee Paulson and Harper Weeks. Poplar went back ahead on a spike by Young and an ace by Fourbear. After an ace by Paulson put Wolf Point ahead 24-23, Poplar tied the score on a kill by Daralyn Bullchief.

Wolf Point accounted for the final two points of the first set including one on Mattie Azure’s service.

The Indians earned a 1613 lead in the second set on an ace by Young and a kill by Fourbear. After a kill by Wolf Point’s Butterfly Lindsay, the Indians went on to gain a 21-15 advantage on the net play of Fourbear and Bullchief.

Wolf Point battled back with six straight points on two kills by Paulson, strong serves by Azure, a kill by Anna Matejovsky and a kill by Weeks.

Poplar, however, tallied the next three points for a 24-21 advantage. Two kills by Smith closed the margin to 24-23, but Poplar earned the final point for the 25-23 victory.

In the third set, the Wolves pulled even at 1212 on the ace serving of Cali Gorder, but Poplar gained a 15-13 lead on a kill by Fourbear and an ace by Frankie Gourneau. Another ace by Gourneau increased the margin to 17-13.

After a spike by Lindsay, the Indians moved out to a 19-14 lead on a tip and ace by Jacey Azure. A tip and ace by Fourbear and kills by Bullchief produced a 23-15 advantage for the Indians.

Poplar ended the third set with an ace by Fourbear and a kill by Young.

Aces by Lindsay and Azure led the Wolves to a 13-8 advantage in the fourth set. Weeks then scored a kill for a 14-9 lead.

The Indians, however, pulled even at 17-17 as Poplar’s Young and Azure scored aces.

Wolf Point moved back ahead on kills by Azure and Addy Smith, A kill by Ma’Kenzie Jackson increased the margin to 2220.

After an ace by Bullchief tied the score at 22-22, the Indians accounted for three of the final four points to earn the conference victory. The Wolves will play at Glasgow on Thursday, Sept. 17.
