The Roosevelt County law and justice center can be a stressful place especially when emergency or violent incidents must be handled. But staff members there know they always have a four-legged friend that can count on for support - although it helps if they have a snack to share.

Jack, a very friendly canine, came into the lives of sheriff office employees when chief deputy Patrick O’Connor took care of the fourmonth-old puppy in February of 2017.

O’Connor explained that Tina BetsHisMedicine asked him to foster Jack for a couple of days while the puppy was recovering from losing an eye while being neglected by people.

“Tina is pretty crafty and knew what was going to happen,” O’Connor said.

By the end of the night, O’Connor had the feeling that he was going to keep Jack. “He has the nicest disposition of any dog that I’ve had,” O’Connor explained.

Soon, Jack made himself a familiar figure at not only the sheriff’s office but the entire building.

“He makes his rounds. He invites himself to meetings,” O’Connor laughed. Of course, food is always one of Jack’s goals. “You have to pay your Jack tax.”

One of Jack’s favorite stops is dispatch where Kathy Dickey always makes sure he is taken care of. She even prepares omelets for him.

“That’s where he gets the most food,” O’Connor explained. “Dispatch loves him. He’s a source of comfort during stressful times.”

Dickey said of Jack, “He’s the best deputy we have.” She explains that Jack likes to eat anything except for potatoes.

When he gets tired or needs a break from eating, Jack has plenty of options. He has beds available in dispatch, O’Connor’s office, Karla Williams’ office and the sheriff’s office.

Jack seems to get along perfectly with all humans and fellow dogs. The only enemy appears to be cats.

“He’s like 0-50 now with cats,” O’Connor said. “He loves people. He gets along well with everybody.”
