Culbertson Drops League Contests In Savage
After a close first half, Culbertson’s boys’ basketball squad lost at Savage by a 5530 final in Savage on Friday, Jan. 10.
Down by a 9-8 margin at the end of the opening quarter, the Cowboys grabbed a quick lead on a fastbreak basket by Dawson Bergum off a pass from Bridger Salvevold. After Savage’s Adden Erickson fired in a three-pointer, Culbertson’s Plenny Williams hit a free throw to cut the gap to 12-11.
Williams scored off a rebound later in the half to put the Cowboys ahead by a 1312 score. After Savage’s Zane Pilgeram sank a free throw, Gavin Deen accounted for a three-point play for a 16-14 Culbertson lead at intermission.
The Warriors opened the third quarter with the first 10 points. Sayer Erickson scored four of the points to lead Savage to a 24-16 lead.
After Bergum scored off a great save by Deen, Savage struck for the next five points on two baskets by Pilgeram and a free throw by S. Erickson. The Cowboys battled back to 31-24 on the scoring of Williams and Bergum, but a three-pointer by A. Erickson helped Savage take a 3624 at the end of the period.
Savage tallied the first 14 points of the fourth quarter for a 50-24 margin. Braxton Shaw hit three three-pointers during the streak.
Culbertson’s top scorers were Williams with seven points, Bergum with six and Mark Kirkaldie also with six points.
Also scoring for the Cowboys were Brooks Solem with four, Salvevold with four and Deen with three.
Leading Savage were Shaw with 16, A. Erickson with 10 and Hunter Sanders with 10.
In the girls’ game, Savage came away with a 54-33 victory.
After holding only a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, Savage gained a 27-19 half-time advantage.
The Warriors scored 15 points in the third quarter to increase their lead to 42-25 lead.
Top scorers for the Cowgirls were Ayden Ator and Emma Berwick with 10 points each.
Also scoring were Ivy Colvin with six, Leandra Perkins with four, Peyton Labatte with two and Mariana Burciaga with one. Top scorers for Savage were Cambry Conradsen with 18 and Miley Pilgeram with 10 points.
