Poplar Girls Capture Victories
Poplar’s girls’ basketball squad opened its season with two victories during tip-off action in Great Falls.
The Indians started their campaign with an impressive 53-38 victory over Hays-Lodgepole.
Poplar then edged St. Ignatius by a 42-40 final on Saturday, Dec. 7.
After falling behind by a 14-7 margin in the first quarter against St. Ignatius, the Indians grabbed a 21-18 halftime advantage.
Poplar held a 28-23 lead after three quarters of play.
The Indians trailed 38-37 in the fourth quarter until Braelyn Nordwick scored inside with 1:44 remaining.
After St. Ignatius gained the lead at 40-39 by hitting two free throws with 40 seconds left, Poplar’s Mattie Falls Down drove in for a goahead basket with 32 seconds remaining.
Falls Down then came away with a steal, and Nordwick hit a free throw for a 42-40 lead with nine seconds left. Falls Down then intercepted a pass to give the Indians possession.
