Teams Should Be Proud Of Accomplishments Teams Should Be Proud Of Accomplishments

As the school year ends, I think how exciting of a time it was covering sports for our area teams these past several months.

One thing that stands out in my mind is that our area athletes simply never give up.

That determination was most evident during the football season when the Froid/Lake Red Hawks accomplished an amazing 79-75 quarter-final playoff victory against Chester/Joplin/Inverness. The visiting Red Hawks were behind by 29 points at one stage of the contest and by a 52-31 half-time margin. Froid/Lake finally went ahead with 2:11 remaining and then needed to stop the explosive Hawks one final time.

Two weeks later, Froid/ Lake lost to an excellent Centerville team, 63-48, in the state six-man championship game, but even in that loss, the Red Hawks fought back time and time again to make it a very competitive game.

It was truly a pleasure covering those young men this season. Their community should definitely be proud of their accomplishments.

Bainville’s girls’ basketball team also accounted for an impressive run as the Bulldogs played Saturday night at the Eastern C divisional tournament. On their way, the Bulldogs advanced to the District 2C championship game for the first time since 1998. It was the first time that the Bulldogs qualified for the divisional tournament since 2006.

Culbertson’s boys’ basketball team was another good example of a squad that never gave up. The Cowboys struggled during the regular season, but the Cowboys stepped up for an excellent district tournament. Culbertson defeated Bainville and Savage at the district tourney and placed second in the tournament.

There were many other great efforts throughout the school year, but these are the ones that stand out for me. It was an exciting and memorable year. As long as these athletes keep playing with their never-say-die attitudes, we can expect more thrills in the near future.
