State Basketball Records Feature Local Ties

 

It’s interesting to page through the Montana High School Association’s records for basketball. There are many familiar names listed for area fans.

The top scorer of all time for boys’ basketball is Reece Gliko of Highwood who finished with 2,763 points in 1990-93. Brody Grebe of Melstone ranks seconds with 2,540 from 2014-2019. Darby’s Kirk Walker is third with 2,430 in 1989-1992.

Plentywood’s Travis Walker ranks fifth with 2,354 points in 1992-1995 and his father/ coach Duane Walker of Malta stands sixth with 2,290 points.

Brockton’s Tyson Bauer holds seventh place with 2,266 points from 2000-2004.

Gliko also holds the single season scoring mark with 928 points in the 1990-1991 campaign. Outlook’s Shane Lorash is fourth with 833 points in 1969-1970. Brockton’s Quinn Bighorn scored 748 points in 2000-2001 to tie him for 10th place with Travis Walker.

The most points scored in a game was 82 by Journey Emerson of Lame Deer in 2022. Damon Gross Ventre scored 71, also in 2002, for second place. Brockton’s Bauer ranks seventh with 61 points in 2003. Lustre Christian’s Rob Baker scored 60 points in a game in 1988 for 10th place.

Brockton’s Bighorn ranks ninth with an average of 29.9 points per game in 20002001. Darby’s Kirk Walker tops the category with 38.9 points per game in 1991-1992.

Poplar’s Randy Ault ranked fourth all-time for field goal percentage for a season at 71.1 percent in 1986-87. Frenchtown’s Connor Michaud tops the rankings at 79 percent in 2021-2022.

Poplar’s Delray Lilley hit 12 three-pointers in a game during 2023 to rank third in the category. West Yellowstone’s Sam Leep made 14 three-pointers in a game during 2019-2020.

Poplar’s Keith Erickson ranks fifth all-time with 1,223 career rebounds during 19901994. Belt’s Rick Goodman tops the list with 1,929 in 1968-1971.

Felix McGowan of Poplar grabbed 450 rebounds in 1967 to rank sixth for most rebounds in a season. Belt’s Rick Goodman holds the record with 669 in 1970-1971.

McGowan had 34 rebounds in one game during 1968 to rank fifth. Belt’s Goodman and Custer’s Tony Marin each had 38 rebounds in a contest.

Frazer’s Daniel Horsman ranks sixth all time with 208 assists in a season for 20142015. Cascade’s Joe Rasmussen had 268.

For most assists in a game, Poplar’s Kaniel Ricker ranks seventh with 16 in 2023. Lodge Grass’ Elvis Old Bull had 22 in a game during 1990.

Frazer’s Horsman accounted for 329 steals during his career for fifth place. Power’s Nicholas Neuman had 424 steals in his career. Horsman had 131 steals in a season for fourth place.

Wolf Point’s Robert Lowry ranks fourth all time with 472 victories. Dean Gamradt of Dutton/Brady and Fairfield is first with 717 wins.

Lowry is eighth with a winning percentage of 75 percent.

Lowry, Toby Kangas of Sidney and Billings West and Mike McLean of Chester and CM Russell each won six state championships for the most in state history.

Wolf Point is tied for 10th place with eight state boys’ basketball championships. Dillon tops the list with 11 titles. Six teams won six championships.

Brockton scored 2,216 points in 2000-2001 for the 10th most points scored in a season. Roberts accounted for 2,598 points in 1990-1991.

Wolf Point’s 68-63 victory over Plentywood in six overtimes in 2012 ties for the longest game in state history.

Culbertson scored 135 points in a game during 1960 for sixth most points scored in a game. Missoula Loyola scored 152 points in a game during 1991.

During 2000-2001, Brockton averaged 88.6 points in a game for sixth highest average. Roberts averaged 96.2 points a game in 1990-1991.

Brockton scored more than 100 points in a game eight times including four consecutive games during 2000-2001 for fourth place on the list. Highwood scored more than 100 points 11 times in 1991-1992. Brockton’s four consecutive games is tied for first place.

Poplar and Circle combined for 73 rebounds in one game in 1988-1989 for second place behind the 81 total of Highwood vs. Box Elder.

Poplar and Wolf Point combined for 43 made free throws during a game in 1991 for third place in that category.

For girls’ basketball, Brockton’s Kayla Lambert holds the record for most career points with 3,453 in 19982002 and most points scored in a season with 928 in 1999. She holds the top two spots for most points scored in a game with games of 66 and 65 points.

Stacey Menz of Culbertson scored 47 points in a game during 1990 for ninth place.

Lambert also holds the records for most points scored per game during a career at 34.5 points and most points scored per game in a season at 42.2 points.

Wolf Point’s Rachel Ryan ranks sixth with 163 threepoint shots during her career in 2007-2010. Harlowton’s Bailey Snelling is first with 295.

For a career, Havre’s Loree Payne made the most field goals with 771 while Richey’s Tessa Senner is second with 697.

The Richey team of 19992000 ranks well for field goal percentage. Richey’s Keri Zieske tops the list at 70 percent shooting in 1999. Also ranked from Richey is Robyn Milne with 65 percent in both 1999 and 2000. Zieske also shot at 65 percent in 2000. They all ranked third in the category. Richey’s DeLayne Johnston ranks ninth at 59 percent. Richey’s Karly Buller and Milne are tied for 10th at 58 percent.

Richey ranks first for team field goal percentage at 56 in 2000 and second with 55 percent in 1999. Malta’s Stephi Fried is first with 214 assists in 1987. Richey’s Zieske ranks sixth with 176.

Augusta’s Michaela Howe-Cobb ranks first with 455 career blocked shots. Richey’s Milne is third with 328. Fort Benton’s Kim Good had 218 blocked shots in a season. Milne ranks fifth with 125 in 1998, seventh with 105 in 2000 and 10th with 98 in 1999.

Malta holds the record with 10 state girls’ basketball championships. Bozeman and Havre are tied for second with nine titles each.

Teams with the most consecutive wins are Fairfield with 120, Great Falls with 72 and Richey with 69.

The second highest amount of points scored in a game was Frazer’s 92-82 win over Brockton in 1999.
