The Wolf Point boys’ basketball team battled until the very end but lost to Fairview, 60-53, in loser-out action at the District 2B tournament on Feb. 16.

The red-hot shooting of Lennoxx Lilley and standout defensive play by Zandon Calder were highlights for the Wolves during the first half of action. The Wolves struck for the last six points of the second period on two baskets by Lilley and a pair of free throws by Peyton Summers for a 27-25 half-time lead.

Fairview, however, tallied the opening eight points of the third quarter on the scoring of Jeff Tjelde and Tyler Loan to grab a 33-27 advantage.

After the Warriors moved ahead 41-31, Wolf Point’s Summers hit two jumpers to close the margin to six points. Three points by Tjelde increased the margin to 44-35 at the end of the quarter.

The Wolves didn’t back down in the fourth quarter and started the period with a free throw by DJ Fischer and a three-pointer by Cade Stafne. A hoop by Calder off an assist by Jack Kolstad and a top of the key shot by Lilley kept Wolf Point close at 48-43 with 4:33 remaining.

After four straight points by Tjelde, Kolstad fired in a three-pointer at the 3:36 mark. A coast-to-coast drive by Kolstad pulled the Wolves to 52-48.

A free throw by Fischer and a steal and layup by Summers cut the gap to 54-51 with still 1:18 remaining.

The Warriors took control on a 16-footer by Tjelde and two free throws by Tjelde, after a steal by Wyatt McPherson, for a 58-51 lead with only 28 seconds left.

Lilley finished with 14 points and Summers had 12 points. Also scoring Stafne with seven, Kolstad with seven, Fischer with six and Calder with four.

Fairview’s Tjelde accounted for 24 points. Deacon Gackler scored 13 points. Thompson added 10 points.
