Cowboys Stop Bainville, 44-30

The Culbertson Cowboys controlled the middle two quarters to down Bainville, 44-30, during District 2C basketball action on Friday, Feb. 9. Culbertson trailed by a 13-5 margin at the end of the first quarter, but the Cowboys ran off 16 points in the second period for a 21-14 half-time advantage.

The Cowboys accounted for the first 10 points of the second quarter on four points by Bridger Salvevold, two baskets by Gavin Deen and a drive by Mark Kirkaldie for a 15-13 lead.

After Bainville’s Alex Strickland hit a free throw, the Cowboys increased the gap to 21-14 on a hoop by Salvevold, a 14-footer by Deen and an inside basket by Kirkaldie.

The Cowboys enjoyed a good start in the third quarter as three points by Dawson Bergum and a three-pointer by Salvevold produced a 27-14 margin.

Bainville fought back on baskets by Reed Winn and Isaiah Bjorge, but Culbertson’s Salvevold accounted for the final five points of the quarter for a 32-18 advantage.

Salvevold finished with 21 points and Deen added 10 points. Also scoring were Kirkaldie with six, Donte Eagle Boy with four and Bergum with three.

Top scorers for Bainville were Chuck Butikofer with 12 and Sam Butikofer with 10 points. Adding two points each were Winn, Reese Harmon and Bjorge. Strickland and Cayden Boyd each scored a point.
