Red Hawks Beat Cowgirls, 37-28
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks put together an excellent first half and stopped Culbertson, 37-28, in girls’ basketball action on Friday, Jan. 26.
After Culbertson’s Ivy Colvin hit a 16-footer, the Red Hawks accounted for the last 14 points of the first quarter.
Six straight points by Brooklynn Nordwick put the Red Hawks into the league. After Mara Salvevold scored on a fastbreak, Lilly Johnson tallied four points for a 12-2 margin.
B. Nordwick then accounted for another basket to end the opening quarter.
The Red Hawks struck for the first six points of the second half on hoops by Salvevold and Isabelle Nordwick before Culbertson’s Destiny Thompson connected on a shot. A three-pointer by Keira Stentoft put the Red Hawks up 23-4 at the half.
The third quarter ended on a high note for Culbertson when Mariana Burciaga fired in a three-pointer to cut the margin to 30-15.
Down by a 35-21 margin, the Cowgirls fought back to 35-26 on two free throws by Leandra Perkins and three points by Thompson. A steal and layup by Payton Labatte got the Cowgirls as close as 35-28 in the final minute.
B. Nordwick led the Red Hawks with 17 points.
Also scoring were Salvevold with seven, L. Johnson with six, I. Nordwick with four and Stentoft with three points.
Thompson scored 10 points for the Cowgirls. Rounding out the scoring were Burciaga with six, Perkins with five, Labatte with five and Colvin with two points.
