Poplar Edges Froid/Lake Boys, 67-44
The Poplar Indians pulled away in the fourth quarter to post a 67-44 boys’ basketball victory over Froid/Lake on Thursday, Jan. 25.
Poplar gained a 13-6 lead in the first quarter and a 3019 half-time advantage in the non-conference contest. Geordy Medicine Cloud scored 13 points and hit three three-pointers for the Indians during the first half.
The Red Hawks trailed 3425 in the third quarter, but consecutive three-pointers by Landon Kelm cut the difference to 34-31. After Medicine Cloud hit a three-pointer later in the quarter, Mason Dethman drove in for a basket to close the margin to 43-37. Baskets by Walker Burshia and Delray Lilley increased Poplar’s lead to 47-37 to end the third quarter.
After Dethman scored to open the fourth period, the Indians struck for six straight points on a 15-footer by Lilley and two baskets by Ricker. Kelm then hit a three-pointer for a 53-42 game, but Poplar took control with the next 12 points with Medicine Cloud and Lilley leading the attack.
Lilley finished with 23 points and Medicine Cloud had 22 points for the Indians. Also scoring were Burshia with four, William Youngman with three and Kailen Erickson with two points.
Leading the Red Hawks were Dethman with 18 and Kelm with 14 points.
Cody Olson scored six points. Adding two points each were Daniel Forizs, Nate Stentoft and Jacob Nordlund.
