Bulldogs Suffer Overtime Loss
The Bainville Bulldogs lost a heart-breaking overtime football game played in Lambert on Friday, Oct. 6.
The Richey/Lambert Fusion came away with a 32-30 victory in the key conference showdown.
Bainville led early in the contest, but a touchdown by Sage Spinner on the last play of the first half put the Fusion ahead by an 18-16 margin.
The Fusion drove inside Bainville territory early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs’ defense made a nice stand to keep Richey/Lambert out of the end zone.
Bainville then drove to near midfield on a pass play from Rowan Wilson to Charles Butikofer. A pass play from Wilson to Cayden Boyd was good for 17 yards to the Fusion 25.
On a third-and-five play from the seven, the Bulldogs reached the end zone when Wilson connected with Samuel Butikofer with 4:11 remaining in the game. Alex Strickland kicked the conversion for a 24-18 lead.
The Fusion used the running of Spinner and Austin Lien to drive into Bainville territory. On a fourth-andfour play at the 30, the Fusion kept their hopes alive on a halfback pass from Lien to Quaid Marshall for a first down at the eight. Richey/ Lambert faced a fourth down at the five, but the Fusion were able to score when Lien battled in for a 24-24 deadlock with 14 seconds left.
In the overtime period, Spinner gained 14 yards to the one on first down. The senior then scored to put Richey/Lambert in the lead. Lien kicked the conversion for a 32-24 margin.
The Bulldogs faced a fourth down on their possession and were able to score when Wilson passed to Trevor Robertus on a five-yard play. The Fusion put a heavy rush on the conversion kick attempt, and Bainville wasn’t successful on the try.
