Poplar put together a solid defensive performance but fell to Plentywood, 41-0, at home on Saturday, Aug. 28. It was the Indians’ first game playing in the Class C eightman football ranks.

After Plentywood earned a first down at the Poplar 11 on its first possession, the Indians kept them from scoring due to strong defensive plays by Mitchell Youngman, William Youngman and Kaniel Ricker.

On the Wildcats’ next possession, a standout play by Canaan Boyd helped force Plentywood to turn the football over.

After a delay due to lightning, Poplar’s defense remained tough on sacks by Dennis Red Eagle and Gage Berg. The Wildcats, however, gained momentum early in the second quarter when Cameron Brusven raced 26 yards on a fake punt play to the Poplar 27. Three plays later, Brusven scored on a three-yard run with 9:46 left in the half.

Plentywood’s second touchdown came on a 26yard run by Brusven with 6:07 left in the half. A 29-yard pass from Reese Wirtz put the Wildcats ahead by a 21-0 margin.

The Indians kept battling but struggled with injuries. Plentywood added another touchdown on a 31-yard run by Wirtz with 1:34 remaining in the half. Brusven, a transfer student from Shelby, kicked the PAT for a 28-0 margin.

The Wilcats increased their lead to 35-0 on a 30yard carry by Brusven with 11:26 left in the third quarter. Plentywood’s final touchdown came on a 57-yard dash by Wirtz with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter.

Poplar will head to Culbertson for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Sept. 4.
