Deadline Looms For Uncollected Stimulus Checks

A second round of stimulus funding connected to the ongoing pandemic is still under negotiation following the presidential election. Meanwhile, millions of eligible Americans haven’t collected the first round of payments issued to citizens.

In September, the Internal Revenue Service started contacting as many as 9 million Americans who may qualify for a payment but haven’t received them. Poor and underemployed Americans aren’t required to file tax returns, leaving them open to being missed for stimulus payments, since the IRS uses tax return information to deliver payments.

The IRS will allow many citizens to claim a first-time or catch-up payment using a Non-Filers tool if you file by Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. If you miss the deadline, you’ll need to claim your payment during tax season 2021. That tool can be viewed online at irs.gov/ coronavirus/non-filers-enterpayment- info-here.

Under the CARES Act, each qualifying child dependent 16 years and younger was eligible for a $500 check. Some people’s payments were short $500 for each eligible dependent. As with nonfilers, if you’re missing a dependent you can claim it until Nov. 21 and receive the payment in December.
