The two girls did everything together — including getting married on the same day on April 19, 1953, to best friends in Plentywood in a double wedding. She married John Fowler and Jessie married Stanley Nichols.

She worked briefly at Trinity Hospital in the kitchen before working as a secretary/bookkeeper for Culligan Water. She also spent time working at the Retired Senior Volunteer Program as a secretary. Later, she worked as bookkeeper for then Valley Motor Supply, which is now ironically Carquest, the current employer of her son, Donnie; and his boss, her grandson, DJ.

It was through those years and close family friends Norman and Doris Larter’s encouragement that she and John became members of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She and John would often help with the church by volunteering their time to clean the church and as a Sunday school teacher. She also served as church secretary and as church
