By Elizabeth Hendrickson
The Bainville Bulldogs gave their fans plenty to cheer about down the stretch, scoring twice in the fourth quarter before falling just short in a 27-25 loss to the Wibaux Longhorns.
After trailing by 15 points entering the final quarter, Bainville rallied to pull within two with nearly six minutes remaining. Although the Bulldogs could not finish the comeback, they now have a playo_ trip ahead, with a first-round game at Valier scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
Bainville opened the scoring after a fumble recovery set up a touchdown run by Kyn Beery. The score gave the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first quarter.
Wibaux answered with a touchdown run to tie the game at 6-6, but Bainville soon put its passing game to work. Evan Anderson connected with Parker Berwick on a short pass, and Berwick carried it the rest of the way for a touchdown. With 3:45 left in the opening quarter, the Bulldogs were back in front, 12-6.
The Longhorns took control of the scoring in the second quarter. A touchdown run and successful conversion put Wibaux ahead 13-12 with 9:56 before halftime. A touchdown pass and another conversion with just 20 seconds remaining sent the Bulldogs into the break trailing 20-12.
Wibaux added another touchdown with 3:28 left in the third quarter, extending its lead to 27-12.
Bainville answered in the fourth.
Anderson scored on a quarterback keeper with 8:39 remaining, cutting the deficit to 27-18 and giving the Bulldogs an opening to work their way back.
The Bulldogs struck again when Anderson found Berwick for another touchdown pass. Holden Salivar then connected with Rylan on the conversion, bringing Bainville within 27-25 with 5:56 left to play.
Those proved to be the final points of the evening, leaving the Bulldogs two points short after a determined fourth-quarter push.
Bainville now turns its attention to the postseason and a chance to extend its season when the Bulldogs travel to Valier for the opening round of the playo_s.
