Scobey High School senior Shelby Cole appreciates the opportunities she has experienced through the school’s FFA program.

Cole is the president of Scobey’s FFA chapter and enjoys such competitions as livestock judging and veterinary science at NILE along with district FFA competitions. One year, she placed 18th at NILE for livestock judging.

During this past summer’s Daniels County Fair, Cole was the grand champion for overall market steer. She also won senior showmanship for the past three years. In addition, she was overall high point winner for horses.

Soon, she will pick out her steer to prepare for next year’s county fair. She explains that she looks for an animal with a large frame and will meet 4-H standards. Once the purchase is made, Cole spends at least an hour a day with the steer.

She appreciates the community’s support during the FFA chapter’s recent drive-in meal fundraiser. More than 200 pork loin meals were served by FFA members. When asked if Cole had a hand in the cooking of the meal, she laughed, “No, definitely not.”

She is also very active with the Clovers 4-H club where she serves as vice president.

Currently, Cole is competing in cross country for the third straight year. She has qualified for the state meet each year.

“It gets you in shape,” the senior said of the sport. “I like the social aspect.”

At school, her favorite teacher is Melissa Holum. “She’s always there to listen to us,” Cole explained.

Cole’s favorite time of the school day is her work study at the veterinary clinic. “That’s what I want to study and do,” she explained.

She plans to attend either the University of Montana-Western in Dillon or the University of Wyoming and study animal science with a minor in equine science.
