Scobey Downs MonDak
The Scobey Spartans accounted for a dominating performance as they stayed undefeated with a 58-8 league victory over MonDak on Friday, Sept. 11.
The visiting Spartans posted a 32-0 advantage during the first quarter of action. After a short punt by the Thunder, the Spartans began their opening drive on the MonDak 15. Scobey reached the end zone when Reese Tande connected with Blake Lekvold for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Quinn Axtman ran in the conversion for an 8-0 margin.
The Spartans were soon in scoring position again when strong pressure from Torsten Lamb resulted in another short punt by MonDak. Starting on the Thunder 35, the Spartans picked up a first down at the 24 on an 11yard dash by Axtman. On first down, Axtman broke loose for a touchdown. The sophomore running back also got in for the two-point conversion and a 16-0 lead.
After solid tackles by Liam Leininger and Kolten Machart stopped MonDak’s next possession, Scobey struck again in a hurry when Tande hit Lekvold on a 45-yard touchdown pass. Tande ran in the conversion for a 24-0 advantage.
Machart, a senior, then intercepted a pass and went from the MonDak 33 all the way down to the six. Facing fourth down at the one, Axtman scored again for the Spartans. Axtman accounted for the conversion and a 32-0 lead.
An interception by Teagan Fischell ended Mon-Dak’s next possession as Scobey’s defensive unit continued to control action.
After an interception by Lekvold, Scobey’s first touchdown of the second period came on a 65-yard explosive run by Axtman. Machart ran in the conversion for a 40-0 margin.
The Spartans added a touchdown late in the half on a 17-yard counter run by Leininger for a 46-0 advantage.
Scobey struck quickly in the third quarter as Axtman raced 40 yards for another touchdown.
Scobey’s defense then forced another turnover when a forced fumble by Aydan Stentoft was recovered by Reid Cromwell. Scobey’s final touchdown came when Tate Johnsrud took a pitch-out and went 27 yards to the end zone.
The Thunder came close to scoring late in the third quarter, but a pass was intercepted by Tyce Holum.
