Scobey Downs Plentywood, 52-22
Scobey struck early and often in its home football opener against Plentywood on Friday, Sept. 4. The Spartans ran off 46 points in the first half on the way to a 52-22 league victory.
All of Plentywood’s points came during the second half with the clock running.
“In the first half, we controlled it very well,” Scobey Coach Brock Berryhill said of the defensive effort. “We let up a little in the second half, but we got some players more reps which is good.”
The coach credits junior linebacker Asher Handran for especially playing well for the Spartans’ defense.
On the game’s second play from scrimmage, Scobey scored on a 52yard pass play from Reese Tande to Handran for a quick 6-0 lead. With Plentywood’s defense concentrating on Scobey’s running attack, the long connection was open for the Spartans.
After a short punt by the Wildcats, Scobey’s next touchdown came on a 35-yard counter run by Kolten Machart. Quinn Axtman took a pitch-out and ran in the conversion for a 14-0 advantage.
Plentywood’s next possession was also stopped as Cam Cromwell made a tackle for a loss.
The Spartans were soon in scoring position again when Sebastian McGowan made a leaping catch for a 50-yard pass play to the Plentywood three.
From there, Axtman scored another touchdown. Machart raced in for the conversion and a 22-0 lead.
After Tegan Fishell recovered a fumble at the Plentywood 31, the Spartans marched into the red zone on the running skills of Axtman. Facing a second down at the five, Axtman scored the touchdown and conversion for a 30-0 margin near the end of the first quarter.
The Spartans opened the second quarter with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tande to Handran.
Tande missed only two passing attempts in the contest.
“He’s really accurate with the ball,” Coach Berryhill said of Tande. “He’s seeing things well right now.”
Scobey’s final touchdown of the half came on a 34-yard pass from Tande to Handran. Scobey led 46-0 at the half.
The Spartans scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Axtman broke loose for a 16-yard run.
Scobey will play on the road against MonDak on Friday, Sept. 11.
