Big Muddy All-Stars Post Victories At State Baseball Tournament

The Big Muddy All Stars traveled to Belgrade to participate in the state baseball tournament.

On Thursday, July 9, the Big Muddy 12U lost their first game to the Bozeman Bucks 15-1. Seton Wolfe of Scobey started on the mound and went two for three batting. John Millican of Plentywood batted in the lone run for Big Muddy.

On Friday morning, Big Muddy battled Miles City. With the score tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, Colby Carpenter of Plentywood hit a three-run homer to break the tie. Wolfe pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out 11 batters.

Carpenter came in to relief pitch and retired the last two batters to end the game and beat Miles City 4-1. With this win, Big Muddy kept rolling as they took on Gallatin Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in 96 degree temperatures.

Bentley Thompson of Scobey pitched five of the six innings and Carpenter came in to close. Landen Waller of Plentywood doubled to score one run, Wolfe doubled to score two runs and Crew Dethman singled to score one run. Big Muddy won 7-4.

The team celebrated by jumping in the mountain run off waters in Mammoth Ditch next to the field to cool off.

On Saturday morning, Big Muddy took on the Glendive All-Stars in the consolation game. This was a battle for the ages. In the first inning, Big Muddy gave up five runs, but the team kept battling. They tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth and remained tied 6-6 through regulation.

Big Muddy gave up three runs in the top of the seventh and was unable to manufacture any runs in the extra innings. The final score was 9-6.

Waller batted in two runs and Dethman led the team with four hits.

Glendive went on to lose to the Belgrade Bandits 15-5. Belgrade, having lost earlier in the tournament to the Bozeman Bucks had to beat them twice in the championship and that is just what they did. The first with a score of 8-3 and then they squeaked by the second win 9-8.
