Burn Simulation Training Held At RMC
Members of the Simulation in Motion-Montana medical training team recently spent the day in Culbertson running a full burn simulation for local EMS and hospital staff. The event included a combination of outdoor and indoor scenarios and treatments at Roosevelt Medical Center.
SIM-MT is an emergency training company that travels across the state to bring training opportunities to many EMS groups and hospital staffs. Trainers at last week’s event were both employed by SIM-MT, hailing from Circle and Scobey.
Roosevelt Medical Center EMS director Samantha Purvis told the Community News that the Montana Hospital Association provides funding for many trainings, but the interest is organic. “Our crew members train hard to be equipped to respond to many types of emergencies in our communities,” Purvis said. “We all live and work where we serve and we are grateful to be trusted by our fellow residents in their time of need.”
“It was great to have the opportunity to learn on manikins that react stimuli to simulate a real patient,” Purvis added. “The manikins SIMMT has available to train with are able to be programmed to act like a real human, including physical signs of illness and speaking and moving various body parts. We can start simulated IVs and take real vital signs with our own equipment.”
Purvis said the sessions each last about eight hours. “We had two sessions, one in the morning, a working lunch, then one in the afternoon,” she said. “Each session had a pediatric burn victim simulation and an adult burn victim simulation. [...] We are fortunate enough to host trainings multiple times per year, usually two-three times per year.”
Area crew members who attended the event included Liz Mogen, Marsha Schmidt, Dave Norton, Bev Raaum, Bree Strickland, Brenda Kringen and Purvis. SIM-MT training staff included Bobbi Jo Anderson and Kate Bertolino.
