Matejovsky Wins State Title In Pole Vault
It came down to a final attempt, and Wolf Point’s Anna Matejovsky was end to the challenge.
With Matejovsky and Three Forks’ Maya Noble as the only competitors remaining in the Class B girls’ pole vault competition at the state track meet on Friday morning, May 29, each girl missed on their first two attempts at 10-9.
“We were tied with no misses,” Matejovsky said of how the girls stood after 10-6.
At that point, Matejovsky switched to a bigger pole.
The result was clearing the 10-9 height “pretty easily,” she said.
The freshman said, “I was nervous if I would make it.” Noble then missed on her final attempt at 10-9.
Her performance is a new school record. She cleared 10-6 at this year’s district meet to tie the record previously held by Michelle Monson.
Matejovsky then attempted 11-0, but was unsuccessful.
“I was so worked up after 10-9. I was too excited to do it.”
Last school year, Matejovsky became the first eighth-grader in state history to win a state girls’ wrestling championship. She said the wrestling title was a bigger deal because more people are watching the competition. “But it was still pretty cool,” she said of the pole vault title.
Also placing for the Wolves at the state meet was Sean Hamilton. The senior placed fourth in the discus with a personal best of 146-0.
Wolf Point’s Amya Martinez placed at state for the second straight year. The senior earned sixth in the shot put with a mark of 32-7.
Poplar’s Lilliana O’Neal earned sixth place in the discus with a personal best of 112-6.
