Angeline Cheek of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation is the lone Democrat seeking the Public Service Commission position for District 1.

The district encompasses 20 house districts and has the most square miles of any PSC district. Randy Pinocci is the current commissioner and is now seeking the Senate District 12 position.

Republicans who have field for the PSC District 1 position are Je Pattison of Helena and Jeremy Trebas of Great Falls.

According to a social media post, Cheek is seeking the position to ensure that north central and eastern Montana have a seat at the table.

Cheek lists the three core pillars of her campaign:

• Lowering utility costs. She wants to fight unfair rate hikes and protect vulnerable populations from predatory pricing.

• Transparency and ethics. She aims to make sure all deliberations are open, ethical and free from corporate overreach.

• Tribal and rural advocacy: She wants to make sure that tribal nations and rural communities have a direct voice in the state’s energy and telecommunications infrastructure.

For the past 18 years, she has been an advocate for indigenous issues. She holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is working toward a masters degree in psychology. She is also close to holding a bachelors degree in elementary education.

She will run unopposed in the June 2 election. The general election is Nov. 3.
