After a slow start, Bainville’s girls’ basketball team downed Culbertson, 55-37, in the first round of the District 2C tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The Bulldogs led by only a 23-22 half-time margin. Culbertson stayed close on a 14-footer by Emma Berwick to cut the margin to 2726 with 6:32 left in the third quarter.

Bainville gained the upper- hand with the next 16 points of the opening-round game. Hailey Berwick, who scored 13 points in the quarter, started the streak with a coast-to-coast drive. The senior then accounted for a three-point shot and a threepoint play for a 35-26 advantage.

A layup by Lila Butikofer and three free throws by Berwick increased the gap to 4126. Jodi Albus scored inside for a 43-26 score.

A free throw by Aeryn Ator ended Bainville’s streak. A hoop by Jaylynn Bjorge put the Bulldogs up 45-27 at the end of the period.

Two baskets each by Albus and Butikofer increased the margin to 53-27 early in the fourth quarter.

Bainville’s top scorers were Berwick with 21, Albus with 19 and Butikofer with 10 points. Also scoring were Chandi Johnson with five and Bjorge with two.

Leandra Perkins and E. Berwick scored nine points each for the Cowgirls. Payton Labatte had four points. Aeryn Ator and Stella Fox added three points each. Ivy Colvin, Kalia Featherston, Bella Petersen and Ayden Ator had two points each.

A 17-footer by Labatte pulled Culbertson to 11-10 at the end of the opening quarter.

A fast-break basket by Featherston put the Cowgirls ahead, 17-16, during the second quarter. A basket by Johnson gave Bainville a slim 23-22 half-time lead.
