Bainville’s boys’ basketball team gained a big lead in the first half against a cold-shooting Culbertson team and defeated the Cowboys, 52-45, on Friday, Feb. 13.

After Culbertson took a 5-4 lead on a three-point play by Ian Snyder with 6:05 left in the opening quarter, the Cowboys hit a cold spell and didn’t score again until 4:37 was remaining in the second quarter.

The visiting Bulldogs took advantage by scoring the final 14 points of the first period. Parker Berwick, a strong 6-3 sophomore, accounted for eight of those points. Adding points were Evan Anderson with two free throws and Kaiden Holmes with four points.

Bainville scored the first four points of the second period on two free throws by Berwick and a baseline shot by Holmes for a 22-5 margin.

After baskets by Culbertson’s Cord Snyder and Brooks Solem put the score at 26-9, the Bulldogs struck for the final four points of the half on a drive by Rowan Wilson and a short jumper by Kyn Beery for a 30-9 half-time advantage.

Bainville still led by a sizable margin, 41-22, after three quarters of play, but the Cowboys gained momentum in the fourth period on a three-pointer and free throw by Solem.

After Bainville’s point guard Wilson fouled out, the Cowboys’ I. Snyder scored three straight points to close the margin to 41-29 with 5:44 remaining.

Layups by Holmes kept Bainville in control, but two free throws by Solem cut the gap to 49-37 with 2:17 left. Two more free tosses by Solem pulled the Cowboys to 49-39 heading into the final minute.

Maurico Mena hit a three-pointer for a 49-42 game with 32 seconds left, but the Bulldogs put the game away on free throws by Berwick down the stretch.

Leading Bainville were Berwick with 25 and Holmes with 14 points. Wilson finished with seven points. Adding two points each were Anderson, Beery and Charles Johnston.

Solem accounted for 22 of Culbertson’s points.

Also scoring were I. Snyder with nine, Mena with eight, Cord Snyder with three and Cal Steppler with three.
