Our community had a little rain last week, and crops need considerable more. The smoke from Saskatchewan and Manitoba was in the danger zone for outdoor activity like lawn mowing, so any rain was so welcome.

Wednesday, June 11, those who are members of the Nemont Cooperative traveled to Scobey for the 75th anniversary annual meeting. In spite of the chilly day, attendance was super with 392 members and 187 guests for a total of 597. The evening began with a very meaningful invocation given by Du-Wayne Wilson of Opheim Community Church. The Scobey Cub Scout Pack #208 presented the colors, and it was heart-warming to see the entire crowd pay full respect to our country’s flag and sing the national anthem with Jodi Benson, an employee of the Nemont Co-op, which serves 8,308 members.

The candidates for the board of directors spoke, (except Gail Fast of Glasgow who was uncontested for district 3). They were Adam Carney and Matt Stentoff of Scobey, for District 1; and Tracey O’Conner and Matt Gordon of Poplar for District 2.

Avery Hansen won the children’s prize and Carla Leibrand won the drawing for the adults.

A video of the past 75 years’ history and the changes in phones and services was presented. Dennis Kegel, formerly of Peerless, now living in Glasgow, was presented with a 75th anniversary Nemont blanket for turning 75 years old alongside Nemont and others turning 75 could sign up to be given a blanket also if they were members and attended the meeting.

Margaret Martin of the 1950s early staff said she “had never seen a turnout remotely like this year for an annual meeting.”

Retiring CEO Mike Kilgore gave the main message. He served as director of operations for four years and then 16 years as chief executive officer. Quotes from his speech: “Thank you for your support and trust.” “For 20 years, I’ve wanted a turnout like this. Thank you. Your engagement is vital. Here are two important facts: we are still owned by those we serve and the headquarters is still located in Scobey with local employees. That is not possible for seven and a half decades of without your continuous support.” “The staff has grown from one to many and now we have 30,000 customers.” “For 20 years, Betsy and I have been proud to call Scobey our home. The schools are good, and Betsy was able to use her speech therapy degree at DHMC. Rural health care is vital.” “We had reservations with its remoteness, knew a Higher Hand was in this.” “There are no better gravel roads than northeast Montana!” “Our days begin to end when we become silent about things that matter.” “Folks, rural America matters!”
