Scobey Volleyball Seeks State Tournament Berth
With a large amount of returning players this season, Scobey’s volleyball squad expects to be one of the top teams in the Eastern C again this year.
Coach Melissa Holum explains the Spartans lost three key seniors from last year’s team with All-State performer Camrie Holum, Avery Wolfe and Claire Lekvold graduating, but the coach is confident with Scobey’s returning crew.
“We have a very strong team coming back,” Holum said.
Returning varsity girls for the Spartans include senior Paige McGillis, junior Chloe Handran, junior Ainsley Berryhill, junior Chloe Johnson, junior Nikki Rush, sophomore Emery Rouse, sophomore Halle Cromwell and sophomore Ayla Rush.
Rouse, a 6-0 middle blocker, and Handran each earned All-Conference honors last season.
After missing last season due to an injury, junior Ava Stentoft is back for the Spartans. Stentoft started as a freshman.
“We have strong offensive players and we are good defensively,” Holum said. “Youth and energy is exciting to have this year.”
The roster of 18 players includes two seniors, five juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen.
Assistant coaches are Tycelee Bowler and Kylee Anderson.
“State is on our list of things,” Holum said of team’s goals. “We definitely think we are a state caliber team.”
Defending state champion Circle is the favorite in Eastern C heading into the season.
Scobey will host this year’s District tournament on Oct. 29-31.
“We have such a great floor. I’m excited that we get to host,” Holum said.
The Spartans will open their season at an eight-team tournament in Sidney.
