Lady Wolves Enjoy Good Summer
The Lady Wolves’ basketball team finished up its summer offseason Wednesday night with two scrimmages vs Lustre. And boy was it a hot one in the gym with temp around 100 degrees outside all day.
It wasn’t your run of the mill “varsity” vs “varsity” type of evening. Both teams ran split squads in the first game of two. Split squads meaning younger players were mixed with older players. The second game featured all of the younger girls in the first half vs Lustre’s younger girls while the more experienced, older girls played the second half. Lustre came away with the victory in each scrimmage.
A total of 14 players played for the Lady Wolves which is around the number of girls that have been showing up for open gyms all summer long. We typically saw 10-13 a night (a different mix of the 10-13 too), which is really good. There were six eighth graders and two freshmen along with six juniors and one senior on Wednesday night.
Earlier in June, the Lady Wolves played in a tournament in Glendive where they went 3-2 over the weekend. Each day we had a couple of different players (mostly returning varsity players along with one eighth grader and one freshman) which is the nature of the summer season. Players are working, or vacationing, or going to a camp and aren’t always available.
Near the end of June, the Lady Wolves traveled to Glasgow to play Glasgow and Malta’s varsity. This set of games was very interesting as only four varsity players from last season were available. The other four players were three eighth graders and a freshman. The Lady Wolves held their own against the mostly complete varsity squads of Glasgow and Malta, losing by 11 to Glasgow and 15 to Malta.
Overall it was a fantastic summer season. We got to see a lot of new faces in action along with most of our returning players. The girls really worked on their skills and utilized the shooting machine during open gyms.
Coach Campbell, Coach Sansaver-Martinez and myself are very excited for the upcoming basketball season. Good luck to the ladies in volleyball, cross country, and flag football this fall. We will see you in November!
