Yellowjackets Win League Softball Championship
The Wolf Point Yellowjackets pulled through with come-from-behind victories to win the championship at the Big Muddy softball tournament held in Plentywood last week.
Wolf Point opened action with a hard-fought 14-13 victory over Poplar.
Trailing by two runs, the Yellowjackets enjoyed a strong start in the final inning when Mattie Azure reached on a bunt and came around to score.
Marley Moran scored the game’s winning run on a double by Riley Schwarzrock.
Wolf Point’s Vanessa Fourstar had four hits in the victory. McKinlee Paulson added two hits.
Schwarzrock was the starting pitcher, and Marley Moran ended the game on the mound.
The Yellowjackets then came from behind to edge Scobey, 13-9.
Scobey led by a 7-4 margin until a three-run homer by Fourstar tied the game in the fourth inning.
The Yellowjackets trailed 8-7 but gained control with six runs in the sixth to earn a 13-9 victory. Azure scored the go-ahead run for the Yellowjackets.
Having three hits each were Makenzie Jackson and Addy Smith. Fourstar added two hits. Azure had four walks in the contest.
After falling behind by an 8-0 margin, Wolf Point fought back for an 11-8 victory over Plentywood.
The Yellowjackets exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third to pull to 8-7. A triple by Paulson and a hit by Moran highlighted the frame.
Fourstar connected with a three-run homer in the fourth to lead Wolf Point to an 11-8 advantage.
Moran pitched the distance for the victory. She struck out six batters in the game.
Fourstar finished with two hits.
Wolf Point downed Culbertson, 10-3, in the championship game on Wednesday, June 24.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Jackson belted a double to lead Wolf Point.
After Culbertson responded with three runs in the top of the fourth, a double by Schwarzrock and walks helped the Yellowjackets increase their lead to 9-3.
Moran struck-out four of Culbertson’s final six batters of the game. She finished with 10 strike-outs. Azure had a strong defensive game at shortstop.
Leading the hitting attack were Jackson with a double and Schwarzrock with two hits.
Wolf Point’s Bumblebees #1 earned second place in the minor division. After winning four straight games at the tournament, Wolf Point lost to Culbertson in the title game.
