Northern Plains Independent To Expand Coverage To Include Scobey

Wolf Point’s neighbors to the north will lose their hometown newspaper, the Daniels County Leader, on July 31. With this closure, the

Northern Plains Independent

plans to expand its coverage to include Scobey and the rest of Daniels County.

Daniels County Leader

owners Burl and Roz Bowler and their staff are retiring from the newspaper business. They will continue their printing business under the Leader name.

The Northern Plains Independent and its sister paper, the Community News in Culbertson, will now cover the region’s news from Frazer and Lustre on the west to the Montana-North Dakota state line on the east and from Vida in the south to the Canadian border. The Community News will continue its in-depth coverage of eastern Roosevelt County, while the Northern Plains Independent

will focus on the remainder of the region.

Northern Plains Independent readers will see expanded regional news in addition to the stories of the communities already covered.

This regional model works well in other areas — the Cut Bank Pioneer Press is the regional newspaper banner in its area and includes coverage from The Valerian,

Liberty Chronicle, Shelby Promoter, Glacier Reporter

and Independent-Observer all in one larger newspaper. The

Blaine County News-Opinion

added Havre news earlier this year when the Havre Weekly Chronicle ( formerly the Havre Daily News) ceased publishing in April. The Anaconda Leader stopped its presses this year on June 8, and the

Montana Standard of Butte has expanded its coverage of the smaller community.
