Lady Wolves Play Close Game Against Fairfield At Tournament
The Wolf Point Lady Wolves put up a great fight but lost to Fairfield, 45-41, in the first round of the Northern B divisional basketball tournament in Shelby on Wednesday, March 4.
Wolf Point trailed by a 32-29 after three quarters of play against Fairfield, the top-seeded team from District 1B.
The Wolves then struck for the opening four points of the fourth period on two shots by Ma’Kenzie Jackson, including one off an assist from Mattie Azure, to take a 33-32 lead.
After the Eagles hit a free throw, Jackson scored the game’s next three points for a 36-33 margin with 5:14 remaining.
Fairfield responded with a 14-footer by Natalie Harrell and a basket by Nora Hinderager for a 37-36 lead. A free throw by Brynn McGurran put the score at 38-36.
The Wolves pulled even at 38-38 on a basket off a rebound by Jackson at the 2:35 mark. Later, a drive by Maci Fourstar tied the game at 4040 with 2:13 left.
After Fairfield’s Audrey Schubarth and Fourstar exchanged free throws, Fairfield grabbed a 43-41 lead on a basket by McGurran with 52 seconds remaining.
The Wolves then missed on a three-point attempt and the Eagles added two free tosses.
Wolf Point’s top scorers were Jackson with 13, Azure with 11 and Fourstar with 10 points.
Also scoring were Addy Smith with three, Marley Moran with two and Cadence Bouldin with two points.
Harrell led Fairfield with 26 points.
A 14-footer by Moran put the Wolves up 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Trailing in the second quarter, the Wolves battled back on a three-pointer by Azure and three points by Fourstar for a 19-19 deadlock at the half.
