The Wolf Point girls’ basketball squad never trailed in downing Plentywood, 64-46, in loser-out play at the District 2B tournament in Malta on Friday, Feb. 27.

The Wolves opened the contest on a 10-run with Maci Fourstar scoring six of the points and Adalynn Smith and Marley Moran adding baskets.

After Plentywood fought back to 11-6, Cadence Bouldin fired in a three-pointer for Wolf Point. The Wolves went on to enjoy a 16-11 lead at the end of the period.

The Wildcats pulled to four points in the second quarter, but the Wolves responded with a pair of free throws by Fourstar and a three-pointer from way out by Harper Weeks. The Wolves held a 27-21 half-time advantage.

Plentywood cut the gap to 29-26 on a three-pointer by Keira Kelm during third-quarter action. The Wolves came right back with a free throw by Fourstar and a hoop by Smith after a steal by Fourstar.

A three-pointer by Sophie Ricker and a free toss by Moran increased the lead to 3730 late in the period. Plentywood’s Emma Nielsen hit a baseline shot to close the margin to 37-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Senior Amya Martinez stepped up with a pair of three-pointers early in the fourth quarter to put the Wolves up 43-35. A steal and shot by Fourstar increased the lead to 45-35 with 6:16 remaining.

Plentywood was able to come as close as 48-42 when Autumn McCabe fired in a three-pointer with 4:18 left, but Wolf Point responded with shots by Ma’Kenzie Jackson and Fourstar.

After two free throws by Taya Tommerup, the Wolves put the contest away with an inside basket by Jackson, a coast-to-coast drive by Bouldin and a basket by Mattie Azure for a 58-44 advantage with only 1:15 left.

Fourstar led the Wolves with 21 points. Bouldin and Ricker scored eight points each.

Also scoring were Jackson with six, Martinez with six, Moran with five, Smith with four, Azure with three and Weeks with three.

Plentywood’s top scorers were Tommerup, an eighth-grader, with 19 points and Kelm with 14 points.
