Lustre Girls Edge Indians
Lustre took the upper-hand in the second half to edge Poplar, 46-37, in non-conference girls’ basketball action on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The Lions held only a 15-11 half-time advantage in their home game.
Ahead 17-12, the Lions struck for five straight points on a free throw and pull-up jumper by Kencia Brown along with a basket by Lauren Fast.
After Journey Gourneau scored for the Indians, Sidney Klatt fired in a three-pointer for a 25-14 advantage. A pair of free throws by K. Brown put the score at 27-14.
Lustre held a 29-22 margin at the end of the period.
Poplar’s Cammie Martell hit a three-pointer to cut the margin to 31-25 early in the fourth quarter, but Lustre struck back on a 15-footer by Hannah Brown and a basket by Fast off a pass from K. Brown.
After two hoops by Poplar’s Braelyn Nordwick, Lustre’s Lauryn Holzrichter scored twice for a 39-29 lead.
The Indians came as close as 42-37 when Nordwick hit a pair of free throws with 1:02 left, but the Lions scored the game’s final four points.
K. Brown led the Lions with 18 points. Fast finished with eight points.
Also scoring were Holzrichter with six, H. Brown with six, Samantha Neufeld with three, Klatt with three and Harlo Reddig with two points.
Leading Poplar were Nordwick with 13 and Gourneau with 10 points.
Also scoring were Martell with seven, Frankie Gourneau with five and Neya Moran with two.
Lustre led 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. Poplar grabbed an 11-10 lead on a basket by Martell midway into the second period.
Baskets by Fast and Reddig helped the Lions take a 15-11 advantage at the half.
