Wolves Defeat Huntley Project

Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball squad fought off Huntley Project, 69-64, during the tip-off tournament held in Lockwood on Saturday, Dec. 13.

“It’s good to start the season 3-1 and match our win total from last year in the first couple of weeks,” Wolf Point Coach Cole Hanks said. “That means we are improving as a team by leaps and bounds and putting ourselves into a good spot going into conference play this week. Hopefully we can keep improving week in and week out because our conference is tough, and we will have to bring it. But I’m proud of the boys and their resilience.”

Three-pointers by Andrew Williamson and Reed Garfield near the end of the third quarter helped the Wolves gain a 49-44 lead to end the period.

The Wolves were able to increase their lead to seven points on strong inside plays by Richard Campbell and Zandon Calder early in the fourth period.

Wolf Point moved ahead 57-48 on a put-back by Sean Hamilton and a drive by Jett Azure.

The free-throw shooting of Campbell and driving plays by Hamilton put Wolf Point up by a 67-57 margin.

The Red Devils, however, responded with the next seven points to fight back to 6764 with 43 seconds remaining in the non-conference game.

Wolf Point’s Calder then accounted for a dunk to put the margin at five points with only 15 seconds left.

Calder finished with 23 points to lead the Wolves. Also reaching double figures were Hamilton with 12 and Campbell with 11 points.

Also scoring were Azure with nine, Williamson with eight, Garfield with three, Stone Lilley with two and Roper Flaten with one.

Wolf Point opened the game by gaining a 14-6 lead as Calder connected on two three-pointers in the early going.

The Wolves held on for a 17-16 lead at the end of the first period. Wolf Point trailed by a 35-34 half-time margin.

“I thought we played pretty flat this weekend. We had a few kids sick with the flu, but they tried to tough it out and did the best they could,” Hanks said. “Our perimeter defense needs to get better and we need to stop shooting so many threes and get to the rim, but that’s on me. Those are things we can clean up at practice this week.”
