Froid/Lake Fights Off Cowgirls
Froid/Lake outlasted Culbertson in a marathon match during loser-out play at the District 2C volleyball tournament on Friday, Oct. 31. The Red Hawks scored a 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-6, victory.
Down by a 2-1 set margin and an 18-15 score in the fourth set, the Red Hawks appeared in trouble of having their season end with the match. Froid/Lake was then able to pull even on a spike by Jordyn Breuer and a serve by Camri Salvevold. After a kill by Atley Jensen gave the Red Hawks a lead, Culbetson tied the score, 19-19, on a spike by Charity Wilbanks.
With the score deadlocked at 19-19, the Red Hawks accounted for the final six points on the serving of Avery Johnson and net play of Jensen.
In the fifth game, the Red Hawks gained a 6-1 lead on the net play of Isabelle Nordwick and serving of Keira Stentoft. The Cowgirls fought back as close as 6-5 when Emma Berwick hit a kill after a great save was made by Payton Labatte.
Froid/Lake moved ahead 10-6 on a tip by Laytyn Davidson and a spike by Johnson.
After a time out by Culbertson, the Red Hawks struck for the final five points on three aces by Nordwick, a kill by Johnson and a kill by Breuer to win the match.
After the two squads split the first two sets, the Cowgirls used the net play of Catherine Donaldson along with the serving of Mariana Burciaga and Ayden Ator to take an 11-7 lead in the third set.
The Cowgirls trailed by a 20-17 margin, but a spike by Burciaga and two kills by Donaldson cut the gap to 2019, With the score even at 2121, Culbertson moved ahead on kills by Burciaga, Donaldson and Leandra Perkins. After a kill by Froid/Lake’s Jensen closed the margin to 24-22, the Cowgirls ended the set on a spike by Labatte.
Later in the day, the season for Froid/Lake was ended by a strong Savage squad. The Warriors won the match by a 25-8, 25-5, 25-11, final to earn a divisional tournament berth.
Richey/Lambert, Bainville and Savage will represent District 2C at the Eastern C divisional tournament starting Thursday, Nov. 6, in Sidney. The top two teams advance to the state tournament.
