School Officials Approve, Discuss Various Projects

The Wolf Point School Board approved building projects at various sites during its monthly meeting held on Monday, Oct. 13.

Projects approved included re-roofing the administration building for $49,523 and replacing the back door at the administration building for $8,045.

In addition, four security cameras were approved at the high school in the total amount of $12,114. Improvements at Northside Elementary School included $10,327 for a new card reader at the south door, a front vestibule door and iPhone installation.

Shane Reed, facilities director, reported that officials are looking at bids for six doors in the back of the high school gym. The LED lighting project has been completed at the high school.

Reed said all the concrete work is finished for the new track, but in order to add the rubber, low temperatures can’t go below 45 degrees. The decision was made to wait until spring until completing the project.

Reed and Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perkins explained to trustees the plans of adding a door to help separate the alternative learning center program at Southside.

Individuals hired were Erin Ricker as district media specialist, Dawn Garfield as adult education coordinator and Bryce Kirk as volunteer high school chaperone. Adult education instructors hired were Judy Holum, C. Susan Brown, Darcy Keiser, Debra Greenwood, Vivian Schultz and Andrew Vun.

Board chair Roxanne Gourneau discussed a pattern of “good students” quitting sports programs and that schools officials should find out why it’s happening. Gourneau said trustees should be given some answers.

Trustee Michael Turcotte said parents and students don’t complain about staff at school board meetings because they are afraid of retaliation.

Trustees approved out of state travel for third-grade students to visit Fort Union and Fort Buford in North Dakota.

Because of post season volleyball tournaments being held in Wolf Point and the need to have staff members work the tournament, school will only be held for the morning on Thursday, Oct. 30, and there will be no school on Thursday, Nov. 6. There will now be a full day of school on Friday, Feb. 6, and Monday, March 9.
