Wolf Point Loses Defensive Battle, 8-6

An outstanding defensive effort wasn’t quite enough as Wolf Point lost a tough 8-6 decision at Cut Bank in conference football action on Friday, Oct. 10.

Wolf Point opened the contest with a long drive inside Cut Bank territory as the running of Jesse Reed and Kasey Reed highlighted the possession. A face masking penalty on Cut Bank put the ball at the 18 for a first down.

Two straight incompletions, however, ended Wolf Point’s threat.

Cut Bank responded by driving inside Wolf Point territory, but a tackle for loss by Aaryn Hamilton forced Cut Bank into a fourth-and-13 situation. Cut Bank then attempted a fake punt, but Wolf Point’s Sean Hamilton threw the punter down for a loss.

Cut Bank, however, got into scoring position during the second quarter due to a 73yard punt return to the Wolf Point 11. Facing fourth down from the seven, Cut Bank scored on a pass. Cut Bank added two points on a conversion pass for an 8-0 lead with 4:33 left in the half.

On Wolf Point’s first drive of the third quarter, Wolf Point used a scramble run by K. Reed to pick up a first down at the 41. K. Reed then connected with Jayden Dominique for a 38-yard pass play to the Cut Bank 21.

A strong run by J. Reed advanced the ball to the 14, but a penalty pushed Wolf Point back and the team lost the ball on downs.

Wolf Point earned a big break later in the quarter when quarterback pressure delivered by Zandon Calder resulted in an interception by J. Reed at the Cut Bank 23. On first down, K. Reed dashed 19 yards for an apparent first down at the four, but a holding penalty brought the play back. Two more holding calls moved the ball back to the 48 and ended the threat.

Wolf Point’s defense created another turnover in the fourth quarter when Roper Flaten recovered a fumble at the Cut Bank 19. K. Reed then hit S. Hamilton with a pass at the nine, and the senor tight end battled his way to the one.

K. Reed fought his way into the end zone from the one to close the margin to 8-6 with 7:17. Wolf Point’s rushing attempt on the conversion came up just short.

Wolf Point’s next possession started on the 48, and the squad marched down inside the Cut Bank 25 on the running of the Reed brothers. A quarterback sack and an incompletion stopped the threat with under three minutes to play.

After a punt by Cut Bank, Wolf Point had a final chance at its own 48 with 26 seconds remaining. Four deep pass attempts fell incomplete to end the game.

Wolf Point will have its last home game of the season against Fairfield on Friday, Oct. 17.
