Red Hawks Lose In Double Overtime
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks suffered a heartbreaking 66-64 double-overtime loss against Savage in sixman football play on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The Red Hawks trailed 2826 at the half and by a 36-32 margin after three quarters of play. Froid/Lake moved ahead on a 20-yard pass from Aaron Orozco to Eddie Orozco with 9:17 left in the fourth quarter.
Savage regained the lead, 42-38, on an 11-yard dash by Jaeger Tombre with 5:28 remaining. After a short pass from A. Orozco to Rylan Young picked up good yardage to the Savage 18, E. Orozco fought his way to the one. E. Orozco then scored to put the Red Hawks ahead, 44-42, with 4:14 left.
It didn’t take long for the Warriors to respond as Tombre sprinted 62 yards for a touchdown with 3:18 on the clock. Adrian Smelser kicked the conversion for a 50-44 difference.
After the running of E. Orozco marched the Red Hawks into Savage territory, a pass from A. Orozco to Young produced a first down at the two. On third down from the one, E. Orozco scored for a 50-50 deadlock with only 16 seconds left. The Red Hawks attempted a pass for the conversion, but the play didn’t reach the end zone.
In the first overtime, Savage’s Boden Jorgensen scored for the Warriors. Smelser’s kick put the margin at 58-50. On Froid/Lake’s possession, A. Orozco scrambled and then hit Young in the end zone for a 12-yard scoring play on third down. A. Orozco tied the game with a kick.
The Warriors scored on a pass to Tucker Morgan in the second overtime. The conversion kick by Smelser gave Savage a 66-58 lead. The Red Hawks reached the end zone on a run by A. Orozco, but the conversion failed due to a bad snap.
The conference contest started well for the Red Hawks as E. Orozco returned the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown.
Savage struck for the next two touchdowns on runs by Tombre. The Red Hawks pulled even on a three-yard pass play from Young to Teegan Fossum with 5:20 remaining in the half.
After Savage’s Jack Dabill scored with 2:52 left in the half, the Red Hawks pulled to 22-20 on a 22-yard scramble run by A. Orozco late in the half.
The Warriors quickly moved back ahead 28-20, but Froid/Lake reached the end zone on a five-yard run by Fossum on the last play of the half to cut the gap to 28-26.
The Red Hawks will travel to Plevna on Saturday, Sept. 27.
