Don’t Let Your Warming Fire Turn Into Wildfire

Hunting season is underway and it’s still fire season. The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation urges hunters and recreationists to take extra precaution to prevent human- caused wildfires. Even a small warming fire can quickly ignite the next wildfire if left unattended or not fully extinguished.

Each year, firefighters respond to wildfires sparked by seemingly small campfires or warming fires that were thought to be out but were left smoldering. Dry grass, leaves, and duff can continue to burn unnoticed long after hunters have moved on, and a shift in the wind can turn lingering embers into a fast-moving wildfire.

Key Safety Tips for Hunters: Check local fire restrictions. Some areas may still have restrictions in place prohibiting campfires.

Never leave a fire unattended. Even a brief walk away is enough time for sparks to spread.

Drown, stir, and feel. Pour water on the fire, stir the ashes, and feel with the back of your hand to ensure no heat remains. Repeat until the fire is dead out.

Choose safe locations. Avoid building warming fires near grass, brush, or under low-hanging branches.

Consider alternatives. Layer clothing and use portable camp stoves for cooking instead of open fires.

Human-caused wildfires not only threaten forests, wildlife, and the hunting grounds we enjoy, but also endanger nearby homes and communities. Do your part to prevent wildfires to keep these resources and our communities safe. For more information on safe fire practices and current fire restrictions, visit mtfireinfo.org.
