Bainville Food Program Receives Recognition

Montana Made Foods
Bainville students know how to start off their day in a good way. Superintendent of Schools Darin Hannum says about 150 of the school district’s 180 students enjoy breakfast in the school’s cafeteria prior to classes.
The efforts of the school’s kitchen staff haven’t gone unnoticed. The Montana Food Bank Network recently recognized the school as having the best school breakfast in the state. Natasha Matlow is the head cook. Assistant cooks are Ashley Hauso, Erin Brookman and Shelly Brein.
Hannum and others agree that the school’s biscuits and gravy, scones and breakfast sandwiches are the best.
Hannum explained the fantastic breakfasts are just one aspect of the high quality efforts that Matlow has brought to the school district.
“Her big push is to incorporate more Montana made products in the lunchroom,” Hannum said. “We’re lucky to have her.”
The school district purchased the 4-H beef from eighth-grader Tenley Berwick to serve students for part of the school year.
“It’s kind of neat,” Hannum said. “I’m hoping it becomes a tradition.”
Berwick added, “It’s pretty cool.” Hannum said that on the surface local beef might cost more, but it’s really cheaper because it features less fat than other beef.
“It tastes better,” Hannum said. He said that Matlow attempts to hide vegetables in some food items for students to try. He mentioned beet dye in a red velvet cake.
Other items are used from throughout the state including a great spaghetti sauce from Great Falls and lentils from Circle. The Harvest of the Month program has spotlighted certain foods such as winter squash, grains, beets and apples.
“Our kids are going back for more than one serving. They are eating fruits and vegetables,” Hannum said.
