After a close start, the Culbertson Cowgirls cruised to a 49-23 opening-round win over Lustre at the Eastern C divisional tournament on Wednesday, March 1.

A 12-footer by Alexa Reddig and a three-pointer by Aubri Holzrichter put the Lions ahead by an 8-7 margin with 3:25 left in the opening quarter, but Culbertson responded with the final eight points of the period for a 15-8 margin.

A basket by Destiny Thompson after a steal by Makena Hauge started the run. Megan Granbois then accounted for four straight points. A 16-footer by Hauge was good for a seven-point lead.

The Cowgirls then struck for seven straight points to open the second quarter on a three-pointer by Hauge, a basket off a rebound by Granbois and a fast-break hoop by Thompson.

A pair of three-pointers by Hauge later in the quarter increased the margin to 30-12. Culbertson led 30-13 at the half.

The scoring of Grace Brown highlighted Lustre’s play in the third quarter, but the scoring of Granbois and Thompson led Culbertson to a 41-17 advantage after three quarters of play.

Reaching double figures for the Cowgirls were Hauge with 17, Granbois with 15 and Thompson with 10 points.

Adding two points each were Ayden Ator, Mariana Burciaga, Leandra Perkins and Perla Burciaga. Alicyn Ator had one point.

Granbois grabbed nine rebounds. Hauge finished with four assists and six steals.

Scoring for Lustre were Reddig with 12, Brown with six and Holzrichter with five points.

Reddig had 10 rebounds and two steals.
