Wolves Suffer First Loss Of Season In Baker

 

Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball suffered its first loss of the season when the Wolves came up short, 65-63, in Baker on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

The Wolves trailed 31-23 at the half and by as many as 10 points during the third quarter. Baker led 39-36 at the end of the third quarter.

Four straight points by Juliun Benson pulled the Wolves to 48-47, but a four-point play by the Spartans produced a 52-47 margin. Benson scored at the 1:16 mark for a 52-49 game.

After a free throw by Gaige Bushman with 29 seconds left, Benson accounted for a steal and drive for a 52-52 deadlock to force overtime.

The Wolves fell behind early in the extra period, but the scoring of Benson kept Wolf Point close. Two free throws by Kraven Silk put the Wolves up, 59-58, with 2:01 left.

After a basket by Baker, Benson drove in for a hoop to give Wolf Point a 61-60 advantage.

The contest was even at 62-62 until Baker’s Quinn Griffith scored off a pass from Cooper O’Connor with 51 seconds remaining.

A free throw by Cade Stafne closed the gap to 6463 with 41 seconds remaining. The Wolves missed two three-point attempts in the final 12 seconds.

Benson led the Wolves with 30 points. Bushman, Kelby Bauer and Lennoxx Lilley finished with eight points each.

Also scoring for Wolf Point were Peyton Summers with four, Stafne with three and Silk with two points.

Leading Baker were Bryant O’Connor with 17, Gentre Coulter with 16 and C. O’Connor with 11 points.
