Wolves Impressive In Opening Victory over Glasgow

Wolf Point gained the upper- hand from the start and posted a 76-54 season-opening boys’ basketball victory over Glasgow on Friday, Dec. 2.

Kelby Bauer hit three three-pointers during the opening minutes to lead the Wolves to a quick 13-3 advantage.

“We came out on fire and matched their physicality from the tip,” Wolf Point Coach Cole Hanks said. “Our transition was great. I don’t think they expected us to push the ball that much.”

After Glasgow fought back to 16-10 late in the first quarter, the Wolves responded with a drive by Kraven Silk and a three-pointer by Gaige Bushman. Wolf Point held a 21-12 lead at the end of the period.

The Wolves kept rolling in the second quarter as Wolf Point accounted for nine of the first 11 points on five points by Bauer and four by Silk.

A 14-footer by Peyton Summers and a free throw by Silk increased the margin to 3317. Wolf Point put together a 6-0 run late in the half on five points by Benson and a free throw by Jack Kolstad.

The Wolves held a 45-31 half-time lead as Benson scored 16 and Bauer had 14 in the game’s opening 16 minutes.

Benson, a 6-1 senior, put on a show in the second half with 19 more points for a total of 35 points. He said it was the best game of his career.

“I was very excited to play,” Benson said. “It was a great way to start the season. Hopefully, we will keep it going.”

Benson’s effort included a crowd-pleasing dunk off a rebound in the fourth quarter. It was Benson’s first ever dunk in a game.

“I kind of saw Gaige driving and then the ball rolling off the rim,” Benson said. “I just jumped in and dunked it.”

The Wolves accounted for the first nine points of the third quarter on six points by Benson and another three-pointer by Bauer.

The period ended with Benson hitting consecutive three-pointers for a 62-43 advantage en route to the league victory.

Top scorers for the Wolves were Benson with 35 and Bauer with 22. Also scoring were Silk with nine, Bushman with five, Summers with two, Lennoxx Lilley with two and Kolstad with one.

“All four of the seniors are really good leaders,” Hanks said. “They kept everybody in line.”

Leading Glasgow were Keigan Ingram with 17, Wyatt Babb with 10 and Riley Smith with 10 points.

The Wolves will compete at a tournament in Lockwood on Dec. 9-10.
