Under the guidance of new head coach Barry Bighorn, Poplar’s girls’ basketball squad has high expectations this season.

The Indians feature a turnout of 24 players.

Returning starters for Poplar are Morgen Nordwick, Kessee Erickson and Mattie Ayers.

Other players with quality varsity experience include Emma Rae Martell, Rikki Belton, Jazmyn Carrywater and Bailey Dupree.

Seniors include Carrywater and Nordwick.

“I expect the seniors to demonstrate their maturity and leadership for their team,” Bighorn said. “All the girls are working hard and are eager to learn. That’s important for any team as they seek improvement both individually and as a group. They support each other.”

Strengths include speed, the girls are motivated and players feature a strong competitive drive.

“We’re a solid team overall, and we’re going to keep working on improving in every aspect of our game,” Bighorn said.

He sees Malta and Wolf Point as the league favorites heading into the season.

“We’re planning to be in the mix and able to compete with anyone,” Bighorn said.

The team’s goal is to qualify for the state tournament. “The process of improving individually and as a team overall are a little harder to define, but we want to be a team that is getting better throughout the season,” Bighorn said.
