Highways See Improvements During 2022

By Bill Vander Weele

The 2022 year was a busy and successful one regarding road construction projects in northeastern Montana.

Shane Mintz, district administrator for the Montana Department of Transportation in the Glendive district, noted the highlight was the work done on Highway 13 between Wolf Point and Scobey.

“It was a lot of work,” Mintz noted. “It was the biggest thing for Northeastern Montana.”

The project included an overlay south of Highway 2 to Highway 25.

Work on Highway 13 featured a first overlay from mile post 0 to mile post 6.38, a rebuild from mile post 16.6 to mile post 25, a thin overlay from mile post 25 to mile post 37 and an overlay from Scobey to mile marker 39.

Because of a shortage of hot mix for the overlay, crews will finish the overlay between mile markers 25 and 27.5 this spring.

About 15 miles on Highway 13 need to be rebuilt in a future project. A design is in place, but it is probably 5-8 years away.

Another sizable project was an overlay from Brockton to Poplar. The project included creating ADA ramps in the town of Brockton.

The Highway 2 project in Culbertson has been awarded to Knife River Central. The project will begin next spring and will include rebuilding storm drains, sidewalks and concrete in Culbertson.
