The JOM committee for Wolf Point’s schools started its school year with an election of officers on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Rain Turcotte was selected as president. Kris Fourstar was voted to the position of vice president. Imogene Lilley was selected as secretary.

The committee reviewed the budget. After last year, there were $29,343 in carryover funds.

Last year, there was $11,500 spent on graduation incentives for high school seniors and eighth grade students. Stacie Fourstar said the federal JOM program is apparently working on a proposal that allows not only giving funds to fully enrolled students but also to associate members.

Committee members decided to table budget decisions until they have figures regarding student enrollment.

The JOM committee will meet again at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, in the high school library. The public is encouraged to attend.

Johnson-O’Malley is a federal program whose main objective is to ensure Native American children receive educational opportunities. JOM is a supplemental program providing special services to Indian students based on the needs of individual communities.
