Good Day For Red Hawks
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks stayed undefeated in conference play by beating previously undefeated Savage, 4322, on the road on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The Red Hawks fell behind by an early 22-6 deficit, but a 17-yard run by Daniel Forizs moved the ball down to the Savage eight midway into the second quarter. Froid/ Lake went on to score when Austen Hobbs got in from the one with 5:25 left in the half. Mason Dethman kicked the conversion for a 22-14 score.
After strong quarterback pressure by Max Engelke forced Savage to punt the ball, Forizs returned the punt to the Savage five. From there, Hobbs scored with a minute left in the half. Dethman’s kick tied the game at 22-22.
The running of Dethman led the Red Hawks down to the Savage four during third quarter action. Hobbs then fought his way into the end zone for a 28-22 lead with 4:40 left in the period.
The Warriors were able to drive inside Froid/Lake territory early in the fourth period, but a fourth-down sack by Engelke ended the threat. The Red Hawks then marched 43 yards for another touchdown. The drive was highlighted with runs by Dethman and Hobbs. The Red Hawks reached the end zone on a 13-yard dash by Hobbs. Dethman’s kick increased the margin to 36-22 with 7:01 remaining.
Savage drove inside Froid/ Lake territory again, but a tackle for no gain by Dethman and a sack by Hobbs stopped the Warriors. The Red Hawks then struck on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Dethman to Caden Kelm with 49 seconds left.
Savage’s final possession ended on an interception by Kelm.
“We made little adjustments on defense,” Froid/ Lake Coach Michael Reiter said of falling behind early. “Offensively, we started to execute a little better.”
Hobbs carried a big load in the team’s running attack.
Defensive standouts included Hobbs, Kelm, Engelke and safety Cody Olson.
“Once we settled down, we did alright,” Reiter said.
The Red Hawks will meet Jordan for homecoming at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8.
