Voters Favor Excise Taxes In Primary Election
Roosevelt County residents voted in favor of establishing local option excise taxes for both medical and non-medical marijuana during the primary election on Tuesday, June 7.
Adding a 3 percent special local option tax on non-medical marijuana sold in the county passed by a margin of 1,161 to 363.
The option tax for medical marijuana was approved by a 941 to 579 margin.
In Wolf Point, a public safety levy passed by a 246-193 margin.
In Roosevelt County’s sheriff’s race, incumbent Jason Frederick led the way with 857 votes. Brent Nygard was second with 411 votes and will face Frederick in the general election.
Others receiving votes in the sheriff’s election were David Gonzales with 152 votes, Coretta Greybear with 58 votes and William “Willy” Black Dog with 72 votes.
Robert D. Toavs topped the field in the commissioners’ race with 188 votes to advance to the general election.
Edward L. Bach and Ken E. Hentges each received 86 votes. Craig Karge had 70 votes.
In the District 31 Democratic primary, incumbent Frank J. Smith won with 359 votes while challenger Kaci Wallette had 273 votes. Republican Arlie W. Gordon received 586 votes.
In House District 34, Republican Rhonda Knudsen received 2,074 votes.
In the District 1 Public Service Commissioner election, incumbent Randy Pinocci defeated K. Webb Galbreath with 65 percent of the votes.
In the U.S. Representative race for District 2, Penny Ronning won on the Democratic ticket with 58 percent of the race. She received 247 votes in Roosevelt County compared to Mark Sweeney with 187 and Skylar Williams with 110. Incumbent Matt Rosendale received 75 percent of the vote on the Republican ticket.
In the U.S. Representative race for District 1, Ryan Zinke edged Dr. Al Olszewski in the Republican primary. Monica Tranel won on the Democrats’ ballot.
Advancing to the general election in the Supreme Court Justice #2 race were Ingrid Gustafson with 48 percent of the vote and James Brown with 36 percent.
