Lifeguard Rescues Boy At Pool

A heroic effort took place at the Wolf Point Swimming Pool on Saturday, June 11, when a lifeguard used CPR to rescue a young male swimmer.

Joshua Bushman, one of Wolf Point’s senior lifeguards, kept his composure during the emergency situation.

“One of our lifeguards spotted the boy with another swimmer and Joshua jumped into action,” recreation director Dan Horsmon said. He added that a girl scooped the boy out of the water.

After Bushman used CPR on the boy, the young swimmer was taken to the emergency room for a checkup.

“We’re all impressed by his unbelievable job,” Horsmon said.

Bushman said this is his fourth year as a lifeguard at Wolf Point’s pool. He has gone through lifeguard training and has earned CPR certification twice. “It was very scary. I was shaking afterwards.” Bushman said of the incident. “He was unconscious when we got him out of the pool. He wasn’t breathing.”

Bushman says he’s not sure how he was able to stay calm during the time.

“I’ve never been through a situation like that. I was just really glad that I was there,” Bushman said.

Horsmon noted that all of Wolf Point’s lifeguards are CPR First Aid trained. Additional training, which was previously arranged, is taking place this week.

He said he doesn’t remember a swimmer at the Wolf Point pool requiring CPR before. Horsmon commended Wolf Point’s lifeguards for their dedication. “They did exactly what they are supposed to do,” Horsmon said of the response. “That’s why we have lifeguards. The town of Wolf Point should be really proud of them.”
