Poplar Wrestlers Place At Meet

Five of Poplar’s boys’ wrestlers placed at the Cut Bank Invitational during the weekend.

Navarjo Escarcega earned second place at 120 pounds. He pinned Jefferson’s Reed Zander in 1:31 during the first round and Cut Bank’s Kellan Cassidy in 3:43 during the quarter-final round.

Escarcega then pinned Arlee’s Tyler Thomas in 1:34 to advance into the title match. Simms’ Steven Schubarth outpointed Escarcega, 8-3, for the title.

Jason Frederick placed third at 120 pounds. He pinned CMR’s Cole Dejean in 1:23 and Havre’s Colter Soloman in 1:57 during the first two rounds. After losing by an 8-1 decision in the semi-final round, Frederick pinned Cut Bank’s Kellan Cassidy in 2:26 and Jefferson’s Reed Zander in 40 seconds.

Landon Young took third place at 103 pounds. After dropping an overtime match, Young pinned Great Falls’ Tyler Moran in 1:23 and Circle’s Santiago Alonzo in 33 seconds. Young then pinned Cascade’s Nic DeShayes in 2:31 and Circle’s Ruben Nelson in 1:39.

Jacob Berger placed third at 275 pounds. He opened with a pin in 2:48 over Fairfield’s Isaac Lauver. After dropping his next match on a fall, Berger earned a 12-2 victory over Choteau’s Jacob Major and a 2-1 decision over Cut Bank’s Jeremy Gallagher.

Kameron Reum earned sixth at 138 pounds. He won his first two matches on an 8-4 decision and a pin in 5:16.
